Tesla is Coming to Austin – And What that Means for You

Tesla coming to Austin

Work continues on the new Tesla manufacturing plant just outside of Austin, Texas. The factory sits on roughly 2,000 acres and, though it isn’t finished yet, it’s said that it will be an “ecological paradise” when it’s all up and running.

In an interview right after the construction was announced, Elon Musk said:

“We’re going to make it a factory that is going to be stunning; it’s right on the Colorado River. So, we’re actually going to have to have a boardwalk over you, hiking, biking trail. It’s going to basically be an ecological paradise.”

The governor of the state, of course, weighed in on the importance of this new development, saying:

“Texas has the best workforce in the nation and we’ve built an economic environment that allows companies like Tesla to innovate and succeed. Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas will keep the Texas economy the strongest in the nation and will create thousands of jobs for hard-working Texans. I look forward to the tremendous benefits that Tesla’s investment will bring to Central Texas and to the entire state.”

This manufacturing plan is more than just an expansion on the company’s facilities out in California. This is where Tesla will be launching it’s move into the electric pickup truck market with the upcoming sci-fi-inspired “Cybertruck.”

The New Job Scene in Austin

When a large company like Tesla moves into an area, it brings with it a whole lot of new opportunities. Of course, the company received a lot of tax incentives from the state to come here, but in return, it pledged to employ a minimum of 5,000 people eventually.

Even though the factory is still under construction, the company has already listed quite a few new positions out here in the Austin area.

Between all these new jobs and the company’s inevitable partnerships with high schools, colleges, trade groups, and training agencies, we can also expect to see increased demand for long- and short-term housing and furnished apartments in Texas.

When Will Manufacturing Start?

While Tesla has yet to provide a specific timeline for the completion and full launch of the facilities, Elon Musk has stated that he hopes to have everything running (and those Cybertrucks driving) by sometime in late 2021.

There have been some hints that May 1st could be the date for the “first substantial completion” of the factory, but the company has been known to miss many such milestones, so it’s hard to say exactly when production will begin and exactly when those jobs will be available. “Sometime this year” remains a pretty good bet, though.

Living in Texas with Tesla

The manufacturing plant’s proximity to Austin opens up a lot of living options for current residents, eventual residents, and those who only need to live here for a little while.

The Downtown-Central area is a great place to find temporary housing and furnished apartments in Austin. This is definitely the city’s business district, though, and also has a lot of great entertainment options and a thriving nightlife.

You could head up to the northside and see where the residential neighborhoods connect with the high-tech corridor of The Domain. The West side of Austin is also a popular location that is mainly residential with a very laid-back feel.
