5 Reasons Why we Love Austin (and You Should Too)

Austin is growing. It’s full of unique character, and there’s really no other city quite like it. Put simply, we love Austin, and feel, deep down, that you should too.

Of course, we wouldn’t expect those kinds of feelings from you just based on our word alone. Oh, no. We can provide plenty of substantial, quantifiable reasons why Austin is one of the best places to see/visit/live in.

1.  Live Music Capital of the World

In a city with nearly 200 concert venues, the title of Live Music Capital of the World was practically inevitable. Whatever styles or genres you enjoy, we can practically guarantee there’s a place where you can go to experience an amazing live performance.

Jazz? No problem. Rock? Obviously. Country? Why wouldn’t there be? Acid-pop-reggae-influenced-psychedelic-folk? If you look around, you’ll probably find that, too.

We should also note that Austin has great weather nearly all year long. This opens up the city to year-round outdoor concerts and music festivals, so no matter when you visit the city, there is a good chance there will be something going on.

2.  A Place for the Unique (or, as others call it, the “weird”)

Back in 2000, a librarian started the “Keep Austin Weird” trend/movement/ideal, which was a simple rallying point to try and preserve the unique character of the city. A lot of residents got on board with this notion, and it continues to be a defining characteristic of the city.

Just how weird is “weird”? Well, here’s this website: www.keepaustinweird.com. This was started to be a home for what they called “coordinated individualism,” and while it hasn’t been updated in a few years, you can definitely get a feel for what they’re talking about.

3.  The Festival Scene

This is a major destination for festival-goers. The most famous of the lot is SXSW (South by Southwest), where people come to experience the music, movie, and digital entertainment scene at its finest. (We went over this one in detail in the last blog.)

But that’s not all. Austin City Limits (www.aclfestival.com) is another amazing music festival held in Zilker Park featuring a massive lineup in a variety of styles.

Not interested in music? Try the Texas Book Festival (celebrating its 20th anniversary this year), which regularly draws more than 200 international authors. You can find more information on the lineup and events here: www.texasbookfestival.org.

4.  Green in More Ways Than One

Austin is filled with a wide range of beautiful parks. There are some great places where you can just sit and relax or, if you’re feeling more active, get involved in a wide range of events and activities.

At the same time, this city is focused on being green in a more sustainable way. Austin was named one of the top green cities in the United States, and its current goal is to be carbon neutral by 2020 by using a range of renewable sources of power.

5.  Economic Growth

According to Forbes, Austin has the #1 projected annual job growth in the country. This means that there are a lot of people and businesses moving here. Some of them are looking for a new place to start their businesses, while others are trying to get involved with some really big companies. Either way, this area is quickly becoming a center for job opportunities.
